Dear Friend,

LeBron James and Dr. Ian Smith, best-selling author and diet and fitness expert on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, invite you join them for the kick-off of the Cleveland City Challenge.  The Cleveland effort is the first city challenge undertaken as part of The 50 Million Pound Challenge, an unprecedented national campaign to help people take back control of their lives and good health.  Since its launch in April of last year, the Challenge community has grown to more than 500,000 strong and participants have lost well over 2 million pounds.

Nationally, we’re facing an epidemic of excess weight.  The CDC says an unprecedented 135 million Americans and two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight, double the rate a few decades ago.  The African-American community is especially hard hit — 80 percent of women and nearly 70 percent of men face greater risk from weight-related diseases, with life expectancy 5 years below the U.S. norm.

A report in the New England Journal of Medicine found that friends and family set a powerful, almost contagious, example for each other — they gain weight together, but can also lose it together.  The upshot is clear – teaming up with others can help take off the pounds.

That's why individuals and communities across America are coming together to join The Challenge, a free initiative rallying people to, “give up the pounds, not the fight,” and take control of their health and save lives. Signing up for The Challenge is free, simple and anyone can join by going online to register at 50millionpounds.com

At the Cleveland event, which is free and open to the public, you’ll be able to learn more about the campaign and make a personal commitment to your future health and well-being.

Your attendance is so important to making this event a success!  We encourage you to come on out and bring your family and friends.  We look forward to seeing you on June 18!

Thank you for helping spread the word!
